My Cousin Rachel
By Diana Morgan from the novel by Daphne Du Maurier
Rehearsals Begin: July 9, 2019 Performs: August 16, 2019 – October 13, 2019
Director: Heather Parrish
The play begins with Philip Ashley’s return to England. He has been abroad in Italy to visit his cousin Ambrose, but upon his arrival he is informed Ambrose is dead and his wife, Rachel, has left with all his possessions. Philip is convinced Rachel is a mercenary gold digger who married then murdered him for his estate. When Rachel discovers she is not in the will, but that Philip is the heir to Ambrose’s estate, she travels to England to visit him. When she arrives in England, despite his suspicions, Philip cannot help falling in love with her. Although his Uncle Nick and Cousin Louise share their suspicions of Rachel’s true intentions, Philip’s infatuation with Rachel blurs his ability to see the truth. Is Rachel a scheming murderess or a grossly maligned woman? This is a wonderfully written mystery, full of multi-faceted characters, which require actors capable of humor, nuance, and emotional depth. Rated PG.
PHILIP ASHLEY (Male, 18-30) A rich, young, inexperienced man who, despite his intention to remain a bachelor, falls obsessively in love with an older, sophisticated, extravagant woman of questionable character.
LOUISE KENDALL (Female, 17-25) Nick’s daughter and Philip’s childhood friend. With her keen eye and deep love for Philip, she observes and resents his obsession with Rachel and understands the dynamic better than others do.
NICHOLAS KENDALL (Male, 40-65) Louise’s father, sensible, perceptive, and principled. Nick Kendall is a cautious, conservative, late middle-aged lawyer who is good friend and adviser to Philip.
RACHEL ASHLEY (Female, 25-45) Half English, half Italian, Rachel is Ambrose and Philip’s debt-ridden, extravagant cousin, who Ambrose married in Italy. She is beautiful, gracious, vulnerable, charming, sophisticated, always in need of money – and irresistible.
SEECOMBE (Male, 40+) Elderly and loyal, the head of the servants at Philip’s home.
JAMES (Male, 14-20) Young servant under Seecombe’s instruction. Not bright.
ANTONIO RAINALDI (Male, 30-55) Handsome, charming, and wordly, he sees Rachel for who she truly is, and loves her still.
