Good Company Players' Roger Rocka's
May 18 - July 9, 2017
Good Company Players’ rousing production of Damn Yankees hits it out of the park! Based on Douglass Wallop’s novel, “The Year The Yankees Lost The Pennant”, Damn Yankees became a Broadway mega-hit that won seven Tony Awards in 1955. This light, fast-paced and devilishly clever musical is a true American classic. Set in the 1950’s, when the New York Yankees dominated baseball, the show pivots around middle-aged insurance agent Joe Boyd’s long-suffering devotion to the pathetic Washington Senators. When he blurts out in frustration that he’d sell his soul if the Senators could only win the pennant, the Devil appears and offers him a deal — in exchange for soul, Joe Boyd will be changed into the young baseball sensation, Joe Hardy. Joe accepts the deal but inserts an escape clause, and goes on to become a star, transforming the Senators into a winning team. When he realizes that what he really wants is his old life and his true love back, the Devil pulls out all the stops to keep Joe from triggering the escape clause. The script by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop is funny and fast-moving, the characters endearing, and the upbeat Adler & Ross score boasts iconic songs like “Whatever Lola Wants,” “Heart,” and “Shoeless Joe.” It’s a grand slam and everybody goes home a winner! RATED PG
