This feel-good musical is based on the 1992 hit film about an aspiring disco diva who takes refuge in the witness protection program. It’s 1977, and small-time, hard-living nightclub singer, Deloris Van Cartier, is the horrified witness to a murder. She runs to the police and they put her in protective custody and hide her in the one place no one would ever think to look for her – a convent. Continually at odds with the cloistered lifestyle and the rigid and judgmental Mother Superior, Deloris finds a welcome distraction in the convent choir. They are dreadful but when she assigns herself to give them a makeover, the convent starts hopping. The choir becomes all the rage, donations pour in, the media takes notice, — and Deloris’ cover is blown. The gangsters give chase, but they never bargained for the power of the Sisterhood! Filled with roof-raising gospel music, soul-stirring dancing, and an extremely funny story, Sister Act is a reason to rejoice! Rated PG-13.
CAST OF CHARACTERS:
DELORIS VAN CARTIER/SISTER MARY CLARENCE (Female, 18-40) Nightclub performer, hoping for her big break in the music industry. Independent, brash and feisty, she is not a good fit for a convent. Needs great comic timing, strong dance ability and a good belt.
CURTIS JACKSON (Male, 18-50) Deloris’ married gangster boyfriend who owns the nightclub in which Deloris performs. Should sing well and move well.
MOTHER SUPERIOR (Female, 30+) Runs the convent with an iron fist. Does not like Deloris, nor Deloris’ music, even when it brings in much needed money for the convent. Sings.
EDDIE SOUTHER (Male, 18-45)Desk chief of the local police department. An old school mate of Deloris whom she called “Sweaty Eddie”. Should sing well and have good comic and dramatic acting chops..
SISTER MARY PATRICK (Female, 18+) An overly perky nun. Good comic ability.
SISTER MARY ROBERT (Female, 18+) A very shy, retiring nun. Turns out to have an incredible voice.
SISTER MARY LAZARUS (Female, 30+) An older nun from whom Deloris takes over the choir.
MICHELLE (Female, 18-40) Deloris’ backup singer. Should sing well, have harmony skills and dance well.
TINA (Female, 18-40) Deloris’ backup singer. Should sing well, have harmony skills and dance well.
TJ (Male, 18-40) Curtis’ nephew and henchman. Not terribly bright.
JOEY (Male, 18-40) Curtis’ henchman. Rather stupid.
PABLO (Male, 18-40) Curtis’ henchman. No brighter than the other two.
MONSIGNOR O’HARA (Male, 30+) Priest in charge of the parish. Kind and likable.
ENSEMBLE The ensemble does a LOT in this show. All should be in good physical condition, sing and dance well. They will be playing an assortment of characters..
